Why Professionalism Guides Meaningful Travel
There’s Kindness in Connection

Over the past couple of years, we’ve used this space to explore how travel can be a force for good, supporting conservation efforts, strengthening local economies, preserving culture, and deepening human connection. But good intentions alone are not enough. If travel is a force for good, professionalism is the compass that keeps us aligned with that purpose.
Behind every itinerary are significant investments, evolving regulations, international logistics, and moments where experience, not automation, makes the difference. In a world where anyone can subscribe to a booking platform and call themselves a travel agent, the responsibility that comes with planning complex global journeys deserves more than enthusiasm. It demands standards.
We are proud members of the American Society of Travel Advisors, and our advisors hold the Verified Travel Advisor designation, one of the most rigorous credentials currently available in our industry. The VTA requires ethics training, demonstrated knowledge, and ongoing education. It reflects a commitment not only to service, but to accountability and risk management. Travel advisors oversee significant financial commitments, navigate supplier contracts, and advocate for clients when circumstances shift. That stewardship protects travelers and strengthens trust in the broader travel ecosystem.
At its core, professionalism is about sustainability. It means mitigating risk, building trust, and creating a business designed to last. That mindset extends beyond the office and into the destinations we serve. If travel is built on taking without reinvesting, there will eventually be little left to experience. Put another way, to operate without regard for the future would be unprofessional. Stewardship of the places travelers visit is not separate from professionalism; it reflects it.

Expedition partners such as Silversea and Lindblad Expeditions have invested in conservation initiatives in fragile destinations like the Galápagos, while safari operators across Africa work with local conservancies to protect wildlife and support surrounding communities. Through partnerships such as our ongoing work in Namibia alongside Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy, we see how long-term community investment strengthens both the destination and the traveler. These are not marketing programs, but operational decisions rooted in long-term responsibility.
That same commitment to doing things the right way is reflected in our team. This year, our own Nathan Parr was honored with the national Luxury Travel Excellence Award at the inaugural ASTA Globes Awards Gala, chosen from a community of more than 17,000 travel advisor members. The event marked the first time our industry formally celebrated excellence, leadership, and professionalism on this scale. Closer to home, Travel & Cruise Desk was voted Best Travel Agency in Lake Oswego and West Linn for the third consecutive year, reflecting the trust placed in us by the community we serve. Together, these honors speak not just to production, but to preparation, expertise, and the kind of human interaction that technology cannot replace. Luxury at its best is not excess. It is confidence. It is knowing someone has anticipated what you may not see coming and will stand in your corner if plans evolve.
That same approach extends beyond the advisor. It lives in our front desk team, who thoughtfully connects clients with the right advisor, the support team that meticulously builds each travel app itinerary, and the bookkeeping that safeguards transparency and financial integrity. This year, our Client Concierge and the Lake Oswego Chamber Ambassador Chair, Caitlin, was selected to participate in Apple Leisure Group’s 2026 Kindness Conference. The program brings together a select group of travel professionals from across the country to focus on service leadership and the role kindness plays in strengthening our industry. Built around pillars such as kindness to ourselves, kindness to others, and kindness to community, the initiative reinforces that professionalism is not only about knowledge and systems, but about empathy, resilience, and intentional care. That philosophy mirrors what we strive to practice every day. Small, disciplined acts handled ethically and consistently are what build lasting trust.
Travel advisors used to be the only option. Today, we are one of many. The difference is not access, but accountability. Continued education, ethical commitments, and a thoughtful push toward meaningful licensing within our profession ensure that travelers are guided by expertise and accountability. When standards rise, the entire experience is elevated.
Here in Lake Oswego, we have the privilege of serving a community that values integrity and thoughtful decision-making. As a third-generation, family-owned business serving this community for nearly 60 years, we see professionalism not as a credential to display, but as a responsibility to uphold. If travel is a force for good, professionalism is the compass that keeps it pointed in the right direction.
