Is Now the Right Time to Travel Internationally?

If you've found yourself wondering whether now is the right time to travel internationally, you're not alone. Recent news headlines and industry research have pointed to a more cautious traveler mindset, with rising airfare, higher fuel costs, inflation, and economic uncertainty leading many Americans to rethink their vacation plans. While we have not experienced quite the same level of hesitation among our own clients, we are seeing travelers ask more thoughtful questions. Where is my investment best spent? What kind of experience is truly worth it? Who can help me navigate the details if plans change?

That hesitation makes sense. International travel is a meaningful investment of both time and money. It deserves careful thought. So, is it still a good time to travel internationally?

We believe the answer is yes, not without consideration, but with preparation, perspective, and purpose.

International travel offers a kind of understanding that headlines rarely can. There is something profoundly different about sharing a meal with a local family, hearing someone tell the story of their hometown in their own words, or wandering through a centuries-old village where daily life continues much as it has for generations. Destinations become communities. Stories become conversations. Understanding begins to replace assumption.

Advisor Brogan discovered Greenland’s warm communities and rich culture with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions.

More than a century ago, Mark Twain observed that travel is "fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." While the world has changed dramatically since then, his words remain remarkably relevant. Travel does not erase the world's challenges. Instead, it reminds us that behind every headline are ordinary people building businesses, raising families, celebrating traditions, and hoping for a brighter future, much like we are.

That perspective is one of travel's greatest gifts. It is also one of its greatest positive impacts. When we choose to travel thoughtfully, we do more than create memories for ourselves. We support family-owned restaurants, independent guides, artisans preserving generations of craftsmanship, and communities whose livelihoods depend on welcoming visitors with authenticity and pride. Every thoughtful decision, from where we stay to who we choose to travel with, has the potential to leave a meaningful impact long after we have returned home.

Melinda delivers educational supplies to Antigua Girls’ High School through Pack for a Purpose.

Earlier this year, one of our advisors, Melinda, experienced that philosophy firsthand while sailing aboard Explora Journeys. Along with discovering the beauty and culture of Antigua, she carried educational supplies collected by our advisors and clients through Travel Elevates and Pack for a Purpose. Working alongside the Sandals Foundation, those donations were delivered to Antigua Girls' High School, which serves nearly 600 young women between the ages of 12 and 17. The experience was a simple but powerful reminder that travelers do not need to do something extraordinary to make a difference. Sometimes, a little extra space in a suitcase can become an opportunity to support a community we are privileged to visit.

That same spirit is reflected in the partners we choose. Explora Journeys is a wonderful example. While still new to many of our clients, Explora has quickly become one of the most innovative names in luxury ocean travel. Its expanding fleet combines elegant European design with some of the most environmentally advanced ships at sea while embracing a philosophy that values spending more time in destination instead of simply visiting more destinations. Longer stays, overnight calls, and immersive experiences create opportunities to engage more deeply with local cultures, traditions, and communities. When we slow down, we create space for genuine conversations, unexpected discoveries, and the moments that often become the most memorable part of a journey.

As travel advisors, we recognize that today's travelers are asking different questions than they did just a few years ago. They want to know where their investment will have the greatest value. They want confidence that someone is watching over the details. They want guidance when the unexpected happens and reassurance that they are making informed decisions. That is precisely where our role has never been more important. We do not simply arrange flights and reserve hotel rooms. We help travelers navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence, supported by trusted partnerships, firsthand destination knowledge, and advocacy before, during, and after every journey.

Uniworld presents European river cruising at last year’s BEYOND Travel Event.

Those conversations do not have to begin when you're ready to book. In fact, we believe they should start much earlier. That is one of the reasons we created our annual BEYOND Travel Event. This year's theme, Explore with Confidence, reflects what we hope every traveler gains before they ever leave home. On October 14, our Lake Oswego community will have the opportunity to meet Explora Journeys and more than 20 other trusted travel partners, ask questions, hear directly from destination experts, and discover how thoughtful travel can enrich our lives while creating a positive impact around the world.

We're not saying the world becomes less complicated when we travel. It simply becomes more human.

We'll share more about BEYOND Travel Event: Explore with Confidence in our October issue. In the meantime, we hope you'll save the date and learn more at tcdsk.com/bte26.
